St Paul’s Letter to the Romans is his most systematic presentation of the Gospel. He explains human sinfulness and the forgiveness that we have in Christ (Romans 1-8). In Romans 9 and 10, St Paul describes a theological problem: Most Jews are rejecting the Gospel. Not only are they missing out on salvation, it makes other people wonder whether God is faithful to His promises. In chapter 11, St Paul affirms that God has a surprising plan for the people of Israel.

After devoting eleven chapters to heavy-duty theology, St Paul transitions in chapter 12 from doctrine to duty, from creed to conduct, and from belief to behaviour. He says, “In light of what God has done, here is how we should live.” In other words, we are to live out our beliefs. It is a chapter of action! St Paul’s thesis is: Beliefs should impact behaviour.

St Paul wrote that we should be a living sacrifice, transformed in our minds so that we please God and do His will. He also described the attitudes that should characterize believers: humility, service, love and peace. The idea of unfeigned love pervades Romans 12. In some ways this is another “Love Chapter” like 1 Corinthians 13. God’s love is certainly a major theme in Romans 12.
